The working environment of sign language interpreters and their customers is getting increasingly global and international. In companies, at universities and at other settings, English is used more and more and sign language interpreters are expected to deal effortlessly also with this language. Our seminar series “English for Sign Language Interpreters” has been especially designed together with internationally renowned sign language interpreter and seminar trainer Zane Hema from Australia to help you deal better with this kind of professional requirement. The seminar series consists of four separate topics on four consecutive days that combine well with each other. You can choose to attend only one or up to all four of the seminars. The seminars all take place in Hamburg, a very beautiful city, worth a trip and offering a huge number of sights, cultural and shopping opportunities to visitors. These are the topics of the seminars: Seminar 1: Social Interpreting & Small Talk (20 September 2016) Interpreting is needed not only for speeches and meetings, but also for small talk during breaks or at common dinners of conference participants. In this seminar participants get the opportunity to warm up with these situations in order to be able to act in them as an interpreter with the necessary ease. Thus, the seminar is a helpful basis for the three subsequent topics. Seminar 2: Colloquial Language & Idioms (21 September 2016) Like other languages, the English language comprises different levels like colloquial language, idioms and familiar quotations. As a non-native speaker of English it is difficult to understand these immediately. A literal interpretation would not make much sense and might cause confusion. In this seminar, participants learn to recognize the function of English colloquialisms and idioms, to understand and deal with them.

Seminar 3: Politeness, Irony & Misunderstandings (22 September 2016) Especially in official and commercial circumstances, the English language often uses certain polite phrases that do not express explicitly what was meant. A polite denial may even sound like a confirmation for a non-native speaker, and irony is sometimes not easy to spot. In this seminar, we will focus on those linguistic and cultural features and will help to detect and understand certain pitfalls. Seminar 4: Conference Settings & Interpreting (23 September 2016) Quite often English conferences and speeches have to be interpreted by sign language interpreters that are non-native speakers of English. This seminar helps to prepare for this kind of situations and helps sign language interpreters to develop their skills in this field. Workshop trainer Zane Hema is a native English speaker and very experienced and well-known sign language interpreter who has travelled the world interpreting and teaching sign language interpreters. After many years in London he currently lives in Australia. Workshop language This workshop will be presented in English, in a way that makes it easy for all participants as non-native speakers to follow and make contributions. Target audience This seminar has been designed for all sign language interpreters who are nonnative English speakers. Time On all four days (20, 21, 22 and 23 September 2016) the seminars will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m.
